Playdough is a fantastic activity example of learning through play. Building sensory & fine motor skills, creativity, imagination, as well as holding many therapeutic & calming benefits as they knead, shape and mould.
There are countless ways to naturally colour & scent Playdough. Today we are sharing some of our favourites, PLUS our softest, squishiest recipe too!
- Spices – clove, ginger, cinnamon,
- Essence Oils – lemon, orange, lavender, peppermint, rose, coconut,
- Herbs – mint, rosemary, basil
- Berries – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries,
- Poppy seeds,
- Sesame seeds,
- Coffee beans,
- Sesame seeds,
- Rose Petals,
- Sunflower seeds
You can also use Powdered Food Colouring to colour your Playdough (We found powdered food colouring at a local cake supply shop). Over the past week we have been learning about SPACE! This simple invitation to play includes home-made Space Story Stones, planet marbles and of course our Galaxy Dough! We also added some (non-edible) glitter to achieve the full GALAXY effect!
There are SO many fantastic recipes for Playdough across the WWW. We’ve tried and tested many of these and after a bit of experimenting, we’ve created a taste safe recipe, just right in softness & squishiness! PLUS it won’t leave any residue on your hands or your play surface. Don’t forget to grab your FREE Taste Safe Playdough Recipe Printable!
You can substitute the Coconut Oil with Vegetable or Olive Oil (or Baby Oil – obviously it would no longer be taste safe though). If you don’t have any Cream of Tartar, you can leave it out, however it won’t last as long, and won’t be as squishy (you may need to add a little more flour to substitute). Don’t forget to add your scents & colourings into the saucepan with all your ingredients. We add the ingredients for texture after the Playdough has been cooled & kneaded.
I recommend storing your Dough in a ziplock bag over a container. This I have found makes the Dough last longer as it has less air and won’t dry out as quick!
Never underestimate the power of Playdough – a foolproof way to keep children (and adults alike) entertained and learning! For more ways to keep your children entertained & learning visit us on our Facebook & Instagram pages!
